Life Next to the Road: Inner_about

Life on the Road

Throughout Africa there are many mind blowing places that simply can't be experienced whilst staying in accommodation in major cities. This is why we will camp as much as possible. Not only will this reduce the total cost of your trip it will allow for a more honest and in depth introduction to this wonderful part of the World.

During our trip we will visit a large variety of different climates, ranging from the vast, dry deserts of Mauritania and Morocco, to the various wetter, greener Sub - Saharan countries. Camping in these challenging environments can be difficult yet highly rewarding. All three of us have extensive experience camping all over the world and will rely on this knowledge to make this experience as smooth as possible, although there will definitely be challenges! In our last trip in 2016 we camped in lots of different places including; rooftops in Morocco, cliff tops in Western Sahara, the vast desert in Mauritania, under ancient baobab trees in The Sahel and many different schools and churches!

In a typical day on the road we will start to look for places to camp in the mid to late afternoon, this will often be a free camping spot although sometimes it won't be. Sometimes it can be difficult to find suitable places so starting to look in the mid afternoon allows for some wiggle room. This will also allow us to finish setting up camp before it gets dark! We will aim to have a camp fire every night, as this provides a moral boost and allows people to cook on the fire if they want. Setting up and starting the fire is also an enjoyable activity after camp is set up! There will also be a gas burner available for cooking if you wish. The time after setting camp up is perfect for enjoying a drink if you wish, exploring the area or interacting with locals if we are near/in a village, it's up to you how you spend this time! If we are only staying in this spot for one night then the morning will consist of breakfast and then packing up camp and getting on the road at a reasonable time.

Although camping in these areas for extended periods of time can be an extremely rewarding experience, it can definitely be challenging, and it's completely understandable if you want to book yourself into a hotel! The flexibility of having multiple cars will allow for this to be a smooth process. We will be staying in some major cities for several days to get visas so this could be a perfect opportunity to book yourself into a hotel room and recharge your body and mind!
